A while ago TV1′s production team came around and asked if they could feature Sabah’s Ultimate players for one of their programs…
We are pleased to announce that the date for the 3rd Borneo Headhunter’s Hat is Saturday, 25th February 2012. There will be no increase in the registration fees and set at an affordable RM 60 per person, which includes the following:
Registration details will be announced soon but you can start looking out for fantastic deals on airlines now. Based on the tremendous interests we’ve received during our past tournaments, the tournament organizers have decided to cap the number of participants to the first 120 paid individuals or last registration date on 13th January 2012, whichever comes first. In the event that the cap is reached before the last registration date, individuals will be placed on a waiting list.
Banking details will be sent to you once we’re received your registration forms and verified your space. Due to budget constraints, players are required to pay the registration fees in order to confirm their registration and any players whose payments are not received on or before Sunday 15th January will not be confirmed registered!
A hat tournament is an open tournament where players are divided into balanced teams taking into account player’s abilities of catching, throwing, defense and speed. In order to achieve this balance, participants are reminded to be honest with their abilities. Beginners are expected to put mostly 1’s into playing abilities but they could put higher scores in speed ‘cause they’re just freaking fast runners whereas more experienced players are expected to put higher scores in playing abilities but it could mean they’re slower runners. Brutal honesty of your scores enables more balanced teams and a highly enjoyable tournament experience!
We look forward to receiving your registration forms! Bookmark http:/sabahultimate.com/headhunters-hat/ for recent updates and information! See you all on the field!

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah: An awesome weekend of Ultimate action at the Borneo Headhunters Hat 2011 wrapped up here Sunday at the most international pick-up session Kota Kinabalu has ever seen.
The surprisingly fast-paced, and energetic pickup game was the cherry on top of the super-moist, double chocolate cake that was Saturday’s hot hot hot Borneo Headhunters Hat Ultimate tournament.
The tournament had lots brilliant plays, dramatic fumbles, a sudden spate of ankle-rolls and cramps, a slight drought of layouts – but that which there were, were brilliant – and fairly evenly balanced teams.
Before lunch the games were narrowly contested and the scores were fairly close. After lunch the differences were slightly more pronounced, but both the penultimate game and the finals were decided off Universe Points, making for riveting Ultimate right here on Sabah soil.
An incredible mix of new and experienced players representing nearly 10 countries attended the Hat this year, hopefully giving the newer players the opportunities to measure themselves against more experienced ones and learn something new.
The participants also showed tremendous spirit, with all the teams scoring either 29, 30 or 31 points for Spirit, with the eventual winners just pipping everyone to the post with 32 points.
Here’s what the day’s 12 games came to.
1st & Tournament Champs: Blue Wave in Blue
2nd: Big O in Orange
3rd: Hail Bloody Mary in Red
4th: Mat Salehs in White
5th: Lean Mean Green Machine in Green
MVP Female: Nicky from Blue Wave
MVP Male: Donny from Blue Wave
Best Female Layout: Lee from Big O
Best Male Layout: Dickson from Big O
Best Spirit Award: Mat Salehs

Without our sponsors we would have been a lot more limited and would like to say a big thank you for your monetary contributions, discounts and supplies.

A big thanks to our Official Photographer Charles Lai who snapped away the entire day.
There were loads of other cameras out at the tournament though, so if you would like to share your images with everybody, please email me the link and I will list it here. If you give me the Facebook link from the bottom of your Facebook album’s front page, then people who are not your friend can also view it.

The 27 extra shirts we had printed to sell at the tournament sold out fast, so we’re accepting orders for a second print run. If you want to order more shirts, please email me with the quantity you want, what size and colour and add your phone number, and when we have enough we’ll order some more.
Available colours are red, green, blue, orange, white and black.
And that’s it – thanks again to all the participants, spectators, sponsors and suppliers that were involved with this year’s Headhunters Hat. We look forward to doing it all again, but better, next year!
See you then!
Ok Headhunters Hat participants, it’s the final countdown.
Hopefully you have your sunscreen and hat packed and you’re ready for a hot weekend of Ultimate in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah!
However, prepare for mud – if it rains leading up to the weekend, the field might be a bit muddy. Nothing much you can do about it, except play safe. Always be aware of what’s going on around you, and don’t jump for discs that already has 5 other people jumping for it.
We’re going to try and avoid injuries in this tournament.
“Will you encourage particpants to play with the wigs on Saturday?”, asked a participant in an anxious email. By all means, it’s the Getting Wiggy With It edition of the Borneo Headhunters Hat – so wear the wig as much as you like.
The schedule looks roughly like this:
Registration party at Upperstar (see this post for details)
Borneo Headhunters Hat
Getting Wiggy With It Party!
Sabah Ultimate Pickup Game
Play clothes, dry clothes, sunscreen, socks and football boots / cleats.
We will provide: your team shirt (of course), water, bananas, lunch, snacks and limited Gatorade and beer on the field.
There will be a few shaded areas next to the field, but there’s a large covered area about 20m from the field to hide from the sun / rain in between games.
Read. The. Rules.
If you remember nothing, remember the Spirit of the Game: things like calling yourself out when you’re out. Not calling a score if you caught it outside the endzone, and above all – be competitive, but have fun!
Don’t forget, you can congratulate your opponent when they score on you. And at all times be respectful to other players. No arguments are needed. The rules are simple: if a foul is contested, it goes back to the thrower. Game on.
One team with the most outstanding spirit will win the coveted Spirit Award. It’s not just about the games you play afterwards, or the cheers, but also how you call fouls and deal with fouls called on you.
Think about it.
Other than that, you are what you are for this tournament. Make the most of it, have fun and learn as much as you can.
Here it is, the details of this weekend’s Borneo Headhunters Hat!
On the map below you’ll see 5 bubbles. Green bubble are accommodation, pink bubbles are party venues and the yellow bubble is the fields where we’ll be playing.
For those of you staying at the Borneo Beachouse Backpackers, you’ll notice that you are very near the sea.
What you will also see upon closer inspection is that you’re very near our Sunday pickup field – literally across the road from the Borneo Beachouse Backpackers. So if you didn’t get enough Ultimate on Saturday, join us on Sunday from 4 – 6pm for more!
If you’re staying with our sponsors in the city, that’s it.
Part of the Warisan Shopping Centre, next to the Centrepoint Shopping Centre, and just behind the KK Waterfront, at either the Imperial International Hotel or the Imperial Boutec Hotel, you really are in the middle of the city with everything at your finger tips.
One of 3 outlets, the Upperstar Kota Kinabalu is where we will all meet on Friday night. Come drop by from 19:30 – we’ll be upstairs in the bit above Burger King. Most importantly, you’ll find out in which colour team you are and who you teams are.
Upperstar has some of the cheapest prices in town for food and drink, so come knock yourself out. We should be there until about 23:00, so make it if you can.
The fields are in Tanjung Aru town, right behind the Tanjung Aru Plaza and the police station. Our games will start early, so be there at 08:00 to warm up, get to know your team and think of a team name and cheer.
This needs to be reported to the Tournament Director by 08:30, because the games will start soon after that. Don’t be late and make your team forfeit the first game. That would be bad.
Ah, the venue for our Saturday night party. Remember, there’s prizes for the best wigs & outfits, so don’t be shy – we’ll all be doing it.
Meet here from 19:30 – there’s a restaurant right next to the bar, which as a varied menu. So don’t worry about eating anywhere else.
We will be providing some free drinks, and softdrinks for those who don’t drink, so come early and stay late – there’s a live band, pool tables and good atmosphere, so bring your lively self and celebrate the awesome Ultimate you would have played.

OK Borneo Headhunters Hat 2011 Participants, here’s some more details for those of you itching to know more about Sabah’s Hat tournament.
First, the Rules.
Yes, the rules are what makes Ultimate Ultimate, so our tournament will follow them.
We follow the WFDF’s Latest Ultimate Rules. Learn it; love it; play it.
You have no excuses not to know the rules. Know your stuff when it comes to contact, fouls and especially the Spirit of the Game!
The the By Laws for the Borneo Headhunters Hat 2011 is as follow:
Teams will elect their own captains on Saturday morning.
Pick somebody who will champion the Spirit of the Game at all cost. Also good to have in a captain: Knowledge of the Rules, Knowledge of Game Plays and Experience.
Your captain must report to the Tournament Director by 08:30, Saturday morning with your team name, which you also have to decide on.
Total: 40 mins + 5 min half time (20 mins a side)
At Half Time, finish the current point. The time it takes to finish that point will be deducted from your second half.
Gap Between Games: 15 mins
Time Out: 1 per team per game (60 seconds only)
First to 15 wins, but lead by at least 2 points.
If by the 35th min there is no clear winner, a Cap will be called. Then teams will finish the current point and check the Leading Score, before they restart play. The first team to reach Leading Score + 1 will win the game.
It is compulsory to have a minimum of 1 female player per point.
With Captains’ Agreement more female players can play per point, but never less.
Duration: 50 minutes + 5 min break.
Winning Score: First to 17 wins, win by 2 points (TD may call a time cap if the game drags on too long)
Other rules remain the same.
There are 5 teams. Each team will play a Round Robin of 4 games.
After the initial Round Robin, the top 4 teams will play a 5th game each.
After each game, a team scores 1 point for winning, and 0 points for losing.
The more wins, the higher the rank. If several teams have the same rank, Point Differential will be used.
Point Differential = Offense Points – Defense Points
Example: Your team scores 10, your opponents score 4. Your Point Differential is 6 (10 minus 4)
Or: You score 7 and your opponents score 13. Your Point Differential is -6 (7 minus 13)
If after considering wins and Points Differential teams are still tied for a rank, a Boat Race consisting of no less than 7 players per team will determine the winning team.
The Losers’ Bracket will be played by teams ranked 3rd & 4th.
The Winners Bracket will be played by teams ranked 1st & 2nd.
The winner of the Winners Bracket will be the Tournament Champions.
Tournament Champs: The overall winning team
Spirit Champions: The team judged by other teams to have the best Spirit (general Spirit, foul calls, courtesy, cheers for opponents & games)
Most Valuable Player – Female: The girl judged by each team to have made the most valuable contribution to her team;
Most Valuable Player – Male: The guy judged by each team to have made the most valuable contribution to his team;
Best Team Name: A token prize to the team with the best name.

The Tournament Director (TD) has the last and final say.
We have made every effort to balance the teams. Your team is what it is. Act like a champion and use what you have to overcome adversity.
Whatever happens to your team’s players on the day (no shows, upset stomachs, snowball in the eye) is your team’s fate and we cannot change it.
The Borneo Headhunters Hat 2011 wants to be known as the Best Spirited Tournament in Asia. Help us by being friendly, having fun and making good calls on the field.
Any incidents of excessively bad Spirit will be swiftly and efficiently dealt with by the Team Captains and the Tournament Director, which could include disqualification, revoked tournament privileges, being asked to leave or all of the above.
Winning is good, but playing well regardless of whether or not you’re winning, is better.
Let’s all be better! And have fun while we’re at it.
